Looking for an Adventure

I am thinking about taking some extended time from work and taking a trip across country. My main goal is to play most of this by ear. I have a general idea as to where I want to go, but I am going to let the road take me where it may. I am looking for possible travel companions for the the whole trip or even various legs. However, I have no idea how to start looking. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks,
