Vegas to Frisco in October

I am in the early stages of planning a trip from las Vegas to San Francisco in October of this year. I am from the UK and will fly in, rent a car and fly out from SF (or LA?).

I'd like to visit the Grand Canyon, Yosemite and San Diego zoo.

What other notable (or largest ball of twine type) attractions lie on this route? Any recommended books or web sites (I am using mapquest ATM) or any other suggestions to make a worthwhile holiday?

There are many beautiful places around the area you will be travelling. My favorite place is Joshua Tree Monument. If you feel like heading north before you head south, visit Bryce Canyon and Arches National Park in southern Utah. If you love the desert, you will love these places. Enjoy!
