About as Cross Country as it gets- BOSTON to LA

Hello There Roadtrippers!

My boyfriend has finally decided to move to LA, so I am going to fly to Boston and we are going to drive back. Unfortunately we don't have a lot of time to do the trip, only 9 days. We want to try to see as much as we can.

We have decided our route will be:

Boston, MA to Clarksville, NY
Clarksville, NY to Chicago, IL
Chicago, IL to St. Louis, MO
St. Louis, MO to Austin, TX
Austin, TX to Phoenix, AZ
…and then finally Phoenix, AZ to Los Angeles, CA.

The only thing we have planned in any of these cities so far is a baseball game in St. Louis. We will be driving from July 16th to July 24th. We would love suggestions for interesting places to stop between these cities and/or any festivals going on along the way. We also love to try new foods. We are pretty much open to checking out anything from the cheesy to the beautiful. Bring on the suggestions Road Trippers!

How hard and fast are your intermediate cities and why have you chosen these particular places? Usually, when I route is as 'unstraight' as yours is and the intermediate stops so unevenly spaced, there are reasons. Those reasons would go a long way towards helping people give you the kind of trip your looking for. Specifically, I could find no Clarksville, NY - just the small hamlet of Clarkville near Northville in the Adirondacks, and a bare 225 miles into your cross country journey. From there to Chicago is over 800 miles and not possible to drive safely in a day. Similarly St. Louis to Austin is 900 miles and Austin to Phoenix a thousand. So, why this route and these points?
