April Trip

Hi Guys,

I am planning a trip: Houston-New Orleans-Memphis-El Paso-Austin-Houston. Can anyone give me info on whether New Orleans is a good destination these days after Hurricane Katrina, how badly it is still affected etc? I understand that the tourist parts are probably OK, but what about the rest? I don't want to offend local sensibilities by swanning around in my rental car where people are still suffering deprivation.

They won't think a thing about you "swanning" about in your car.

Are you interested in seeing plantations? If so I suggest getting off I-10 in Gramercy, LA and seeing Oak Alley and Laura plantations. Also, Lafayette, LA is a wonderful town to explore. And it was missed by both of the hurricaines, so all is well there. I can think of a ton more things to do in South Louisiana, just let me know if you want me to keep going.

Laura can correct me if I'm wrong, but a lot of the local economy in New Orleans was spurred on by tourism. They really want the tourists to come back because your money helps rebuild their tourist industry and their city. I'm sure they'll be thrilled to have you swanning. (Good term, a new one on me!)
