San Francisco to L.A.

Hi,
Just joined and would appreciate any information. Four of us travelling next month and taking in L.A., Las Vegas, San Francisco and driving our last week from SFO back to L.A. Firstly where is best area in SFO to be near good restaurants/nightlife etc., and best places to stay over on drive back to L.A.
Really looking forward to our trip and glad of any help.
