West Coast Road Trip

Hi!
I am planning a road trip with my man and my dog for early August, we have
2 1/2 weeks to spare.
I would love to travel the whole coastal route from Canada to Mexico but every one that I tell that to tells me that I am crazy and that we will just spend our days driving and not enjoying the trip. Sooo I am looking for suggestions. We will be leaving from Phoenix Arizona, and the one place that I FOR SURE want to spend at least two days, is in Portland (I have family up there). Neither my man nor my dog have ever been in the NW so I want to take them to the Oregon Coast and Mt.St.Helens and all that good stuff. We will be camping almost every night and I would like to be able to not be driving alot every day or setting up my tent every night.
HELP!
As you can see I am a little overwhelmed by this whole thing. I have no idea how long it takes to get from point A to Point B. I am a memebr of AAA and have been trying to get a trip tik but they are so unhelpful that I am canceling my membership (after the trip of course).
Any one out there with any ideas?

I think your friends are correct. It is possible to drive from Canada to Mexico by Interstate highway in about three days if you were drive at least eight hours per day (shortest distance is ~ 1400 miles). But if you were to drive on the coast road the entire way, it would be about 2200 miles and would require 8-10 hours per day -- about six days. Realistically though, if you are planning on enjoying the journey, sleeping late, taking walks on the beach at night, playing tag with your dog, etc. it would take three weeks more or less.
