At this intersection of California Highways 46 and 41,young film legend James Dean was killed when his Porsche Spyder 550 was struck nearly head-on by Donald Turnupseed in a 1954 Ford Tudor in the late afternoon of September 30, 1955. There is a James Dean Memorial, a metallic structure by a Japanese artist, erected in 1977, wrapped around a tree that supposedly marks the exact site of the crash.
