Opened in 1867 by Scottish immigrants Alexander and Janet Harkin, this characterful store became the hub of social and business life as the community of West Newton flourished thanks to the steamboat trade. Just six years later though, the railroad bypassed town and locusts descended on southern Minnesota, sounding the death knell of the store. It finally closed for business in 1901, remaining untouched until reopening as a museum in 1938.
