The Eielson Visitor's Center, named for pioneering Alaskan Aviator Carl Ben Eielson, is located atop the Eielson Bluffs at Mile 66 on the Denali Park Road. The center boasts a number of exhibits, a small art gallery, and a helpful, knowledgeable staff who are there to provide information and advice about hiking, camping, and other recreational activities within the park. Wildlife abounds in the spectacular landscape. Animals, including grizzlies, can often be seen in the valley below the bluffs.
If you go:
The Eielson Center is one of the primary rest stops for all of the full day Denali Park bus tours, and it's the turnaround point for many of them. Eielson by itself is an eight hour round trip that provides a very full day, and spectacular views of the mountain for those who are lucky enough to catch it when it's clear. No food or drink is available at Eielson, but there are restrooms, and potable water. The nearest campground is at Wonder Lake, 19 miles further west.
