The heart of California gold rush country, Auburn's many well-preserved and still-used buildings from the Nineteenth Century give it a historic feel even though the city is also bustling with trendy shops and restaurants. The majestic Placer County Courthouse on the hill is a frequently photographed sight, as is the tiny Queen Ann style Old Town Firehouse. Above all, many tourists find it a prerequisite to be photographed sitting inside the gold pan of the statue of Claude Chana, reportedly the first prospector to discover gold in these parts. The city is also a rich hub of the arts and outdoor recreation.
