This beautiful domed building positively gleams following a 12 year, $330 million restoration project. Rich wood, brilliant copper and acres of marble provide the perfect setting for an impressive collection of frescos, murals and sculptures. A hand operated cage elevator services - installed in 1923 - is still in service today. If you want to visit the observation deck at the top of the dome though, you'll need to walk - and there are 296 steps to climb.

      If you go:
The Capitol is open to the public 8.00 am - 5.00 pm Monday to Friday, and 8.00 am - 1.00 pm Saturday (closed Sundays and state holidays). Guided tours are available January through May: 9.00, 10.00, and 11.00 am; 1.00, 2.00, and 3.00 pm, and June through December: 9.00 and 11.00 am, 1.00 and 3.00 pm.
