When I took my San Francisco roadtrip, I was so intrigued by this small coastal town in central California that I convinced my folks to take a quick family stroll up to this area during the Spring of 2008.
  1. We took a little detour and headed up Hwy 154 in order to pass Lake Cachuma, north of Santa Barbara, CA. Here is a shot of the Bradbury Dam on the...
  2. Ah, one of those rusty old piers, found in Port Hueneme, CA. We walked it just for some morning exercise and moved on.
  3. Our first stop on the way to Cambria, CA was in Port Hueneme, CA where we had some breakfast.
  4. Ah, we have made it to Cambria, CA, our primary destination. Here we will kick it for a few days.
  5. In California, the hills were overrun this year by mustard greens, producing yellow blankets for miles and miles. These could be seen on Hwy 101
  6. We stopped at the "Flag is Up Farms" horse ranch, run by Monty Roberts near Solvang, CA to appease my mom with her horse-gazing obsession
  7. Normally the Piedras Blancas lighthouse is off limits, but as of January 2008 they started doing tours 3 times a week. We were lucky enough to catch...
  8. How adorable. This female elephant seal is wondering what I'm doing up here.
  9. The Elephant Seal point, found by San Simeon, CA was way more populated than in the fall when I was here last time. We hit the peak season just...
  10. Here is the front entrance to the Piedras Blancas lighthouse. Above the door it reads "AD MDCCCLXXI" which is the year it was built. I'll let you...
  11. We were all very happy we could see the Piedras Blancas Lighthouse up close and personal.
  12. This setup was in the Fog Signal building, directly in front of the Piedras Blancas lighthouse. It produced the sounds that went along with the...
  13. Inside the Piedras Blancas Lighthouse, a map showed the locations of other California coastal lighthouses. A nice little reference photo for our...
  14. The spiraling staircase leads up to the top of the Piedras Blancas Lighthouse, which was unfortunately closed past the first landing. But hey, we...
  15. This weight is what kept the Piedras Blancas Lighthouse lens ticking in the olden days. Like a grandfather clock, it slowly pulled itself down while...
  16. You'll find this scene every spring evening on Moonstone Beach in Cambria, CA. I'm practicing framing my shots for when I get that D-SLR camera...
  17. Here's a wide shot of the California coast at sunset, found on Moonstone Beach in Cambria, CA.
  18. The Piedras Blancas lens has a 99-year home in the town of Cambria, CA, where it will stay until it goes back to the lighthouse. Hopefully. We saw...
  19. We found some huge driftwood on the beaches of Cambria, CA, so I decided I better get in the pose.
  20. This creamery also doubled as the Harmony, CA post office. Unfortunately, it closed for good a few weeks before we got there. Not good news for the...
  21. We took a quick hop-and-a-skip south of Cambria, CA to the town of Harmony (pop. 18). There ain't much here, especially during the off-season.
  22. There he is, the man himself. This portrait of William Hearst can be seen in one of the Gothic Study room of Hearst Castle.
  23. Volunteers dress up in time-period costumes and act out a routine night from the 1930s at Hearst Castle, giving you the feeling that you really are...
  24. I have returned once again to Hearst Castle, north of San Simeon, CA. Only this time I opted to take the sunset tour, which is a completely different...
  25. You'll find Ostriches to feed at Ostrich Land, which is a few miles west of Solvang, CA
