east coast fall road trip help needed

I would like to plan a trip from Washington DC to Quebec round trip, with several stops and overnights along the way. Two stops I am thinking of are Lake Champlain VT, and Niagra Falls. We love to see beautiful fall foliage, and great architecture and history. Anyone have any suggestions on this trip and other interesting sites along the way?
