Default Suggestions for cross-country with kids and dog!

    Hello!

We are driving from CA to NY this summer. We are doing it because we need to be in NY for at least the entire summer (family situation) and we need our van and our dog!

So, of course I can map the route but does anyone have advice of where to find more detailed route information. Specifically, interesting stops along the way (like a giant ball of twine! ; D ), dog-friendly places, suggestions of where to sleep, etc.

    Thanks!

ps: responses of "you're crazy" not needed. I already know that. ; )

Sounds like you a veteran of this type of a trip -- so Welcome to the Great American RoadTrip Forum! We have several tips for traveling with a critter -- here is a good overview. I wasn't sure how long you will have for this adventure -- but the minimum would be five days and if you can stretch it to more -- you can see more stuff.

Sure, there are 5-6 route planning (free) programs that can do a lot of that work for you. Here are the RTA reviews of those programs and here are some comments from the RTA moderators about the efficacy of those same programs. You can also look at our Destinations and Attractions page and also this list of road journals for several more trip ideas.
