    Default Some Quick Thoughts

Since no matter how you go you're going to be in the New York metropolitan area for a significant portion of your trip, I'd first suggest that you minimize the monotony of that by at least taking two different routes to Rhode Island and back. The obvious route is just I-95 all the way. The alternative is to head out along the north shore of Long Island to Orient Point, take the ferry across to New London, and follow the coastal route (US-1). You could take either route in either direction. The coastal route will bring you to a few unique places such as the opportunity to take another ferry over to Block Island and back and some shorefront state parks especially around Black Point. Both routes will take you by Mystic Seaport and a great old-fashioned lobster pound/restaurant - Abbott's in Noank CT. In Rhode Island I would say that Newport should be you prime destination with the Cliff Walk and 'Cottages'.
