  1. Default Seattle to Yellowstone

    Hello!

We are driving from Seattle to Yellowstone in September. We are staying at Yellowstone for 7 days and taking our time driving to and from. We are curious what fun and exciting things there are to stop and visit along the way. ANY info, tips, suggestions and recommendations are greatly appreciated. We are staying on the North side of Yellowstone, in Montana.

    Default Earthquake Lake Geological Area.

Hi, and Welcome to the Great American Roadtrip Forum.

A rarely visited, and very interesting area is the Earthquake Lake Geological Area, on US-287, between US-87 and US-191. You can get brochures for a self guided auto tour of the area at the visitor centre in West Yellowstone, or the Area visitor centre on US-287 at the scene of the slide. The latter also has an old, but none the less interesting short movie of the event.

This was one of my most interesting discoveries on my trip last year, which is recorded at post 95 in this thread.

Default Yes, but how much time ?

You don't say exactly how much time you are taking each way but you should try a different route in each direction. Of course the Grand Tetons and Mormon row to the south of Yellowstone are popular and for good reason, they are fantastic ! If you exited the park via the south you could visit Craters of the Moon, Shoshone Falls [although drier in the Fall still a great sight] and Perhaps stay in Twin Falls, home to the Snake river canyon and Perrine bridge where you can witness 'Base jumpers' throwing themselves off the top ! Then it would be back through Boise towards Seattle, again if you had time you could drive the Columbia river Gorge through to Portland.

Now if I had an extra couple of days heading out to Yellowstone I would certainly consider visiting Glacier NP and driving the Going to the sun road if indeed it was open but even if not, it's still a great place to visit.
