Hello and welcome to the RTA forums !
There really isn't enough info to give you any meaningful advice other than to say you need to do a little research and study a good map to get an idea of the places that interest you and the areas you will be visiting. When to visit for a 6 month trip would be best between March/April and September/October while missing the main winter months. However the desert can be very hot in the summer and the mountans possibly cold and snowy in the Spring and Fall so you can work on that as your planning unfolds.
There is no single "recommended itinerary' as the road trip is all about matching the needs of the individual and making each one unique, that's what seperates it from a 'fly drive holiday' planned by someone else who thinks they know what you like. We can certainly help put your trip together and make suggestions when you tell us more about yourselves and have a few dots on the map, but don't lose sight of the fact that it is your trip and the planning is a big part of the adventure.
An RV for 6 months is going to be a very expensive proposition and cost far more than hotel rooms and a car, but it's a fantastic 'Lifestyle' choice for those that like the life, which I do enjoy BTW. They are great in nature, but not so in the City so again it needs consideration for financial and suitability for the trip. It might be that two loop trips, one in the RV and one in a car, might work better if you want to mix things up a bit. I would purchase a large map of the US and check out the RTA website for ideas, from searching the forums [Lot's of info to be gathered from the Roadtrip field report section] to checking out the Map centre and other planning resources in the tool bars above.
Come back with a baisc plan and more info about yourselves and we will be pleased to help.
My first question is, do you have a visa? If not, are you entitled to a visa? Without a visa it is impossible to spend more than 90 days in North America. If you have a visa, by all means, follow the advice above. But if you do not, I recommend that you not do anything until you have contacted the US consulate for your region.
