  1. Default Washington DC to Niagara Falls. Through Boston way back.

We are considering to stop over on the way, so would like to hear your route suggestions.

On our way back we were considering crossing to Boston and down the coast to back in DC.

We have around 10 days, and we would like to stopover halfway.

We would like to avoid the big cities and stay in the outskirts.

    Thanks

    Default Timeless Advice

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

Although this advice is now nearly eight years old, it is still quite relevant and describes exactly the trip you're now planning, except for the last leg. To be honest, I would not want to come "down the coast" from Boston to Washington, as much of that 'coast' is fairly heavily populated and industrialized. Instead, I would sample a few coastal areas in New England such as Cape Ann and maybe the Rhode Island coast, possibly going as far west as Mystic CN, but then head inland to the Hartford area to get on I-84 and swing wide around NYC to get to either US-209 or I-81 back down to the Harrisburg area for the return to DC.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by 'stopping over' halfway into your ten day trip, but the Poconos, Finger lakes, Berkshires, and Catskills - all areas that you'll be driving through - are great quiet places where quaint inns and B&Bs are plentiful. My wife and I have also done well by renting entire homes for a week at a time, just search using {townname vacation rental}.

Thanks for the very prompt and sound advice. I sure will consider it.

Stop over meant that I would consider stopping over night - rest and explore a bit somewhere half the route. So was looking for any hints for the best locations on route.

    Thanks.

    Default Halfway

Ah, I think I see, you want to spend a night about halfway between Washington and Niagara Falls. In that case, and assuming you would be taking the scenic route north along the Susquehanna River to the Finger Lakes region and then cutting northwest on state and US roads past Letchworth Park, then halfway would be around Williamsport PA. Now Williamsport would be good for a couple of reasons. One, it's a small college town for most of the year with three separate colleges. Secondly, it hosts a major sporting event once a year (the Little League World Series in November) which means that the rest of the year its hotels, motels and inns are somewhat under-booked so you should be able to find a decent room rate.
