  1. Default one week on road from NYC to upstate ny state

I need help in planning a car trip from NYC for approximately one week- 10 days in June. Want to see historic sites and museums and stay in boutique quaint hotels. Then want to fly out of some airport in the state instead of driving back to JFK. I want to go up the Hudson and
Cooperstown and Saratoga Springs. What else? Planninga route seems overwhelming. Should I go to Rochester, Syracuse, etc. Can I?Thanks for your help.

    Default The State Map

Hi, and welcome to the Great American roadtrip forum.

Upstate NY is one of those places you could just hit the road without a plan, and see what's there. All the small towns have something of interest, of history. I found simply driving from the MA border to Buffalo, along route 20, was full of history of early settlement with little local museums. Then there is the Finger Lakes area and the historic Erie Canal. Why not do a loop? You are so lucky living in a State so full of attractions. Just get out a good map - preferably that issued by the State of NY - and see how much there is for you to visit and scenic routes to drive.

Before committing to flying out of a different city, check to see how much the one-way drop fee is going to be on your car rental. There is no place in the whole state of NY that's more than a 1 day drive from NYC. I'd personally plan some sort of a "loop" trip. You could go up the Hudson, head west, and return through the I-86 corridor which is very scenic in its own right.

    Default What's on My List

My wife and I are going to be in that neck of the woods as part of our summer RoadTrip this year. The places on our list of possibilities within the Hudson River Valley and environs include the following: Point au Roche State Park in Plattsburg, NY; Lake Placid Olympic Museum in Lake Placid, NY; Crown Point State Historic Site in Crown Point, NY; Fort Ticonderoga, the Hancock House, and the Fort Ticonderoga Ferry in Ticonderoga, NY; Hubbardton Battlefield State Historic Site in Hubardton, NY; Mount Independence State Historic Site in Orwell, VT; Fort William Henry, the Lake George Historical Museum, and a walking tour of Lake George, NY; and Bennington Battlefield in Hoosick Falls, NY. We don't expect that finding great scenery will be a problem.

We will be flying into and out of Albany, via a puddle-jumper from Newark, but other possibilities include Burlington, VT and Syracuse and Plattsburg, NY, all of which are served by major airlines or their feeder affiliates. Albany is also served by Southwest and Plattsburg is served by Allegiant Airways, neither of which is included in the major airline search engines.
