  1. Default NYC to Maine Help needed

I'm looking to plan a 6-7 day roadtrip from NYC to Portland Maine and back at the end of this month for 6-7 days for July 4. Looking to make it a leisurely drive making stops along the way. Budget is pretty flexible. The only must do's from my travel partners. Ben & Jerrys as to make the list, some hiking, whale watching and moderate hikes

    Default First, Some Light Reading

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

You can see quite a bit of northern New England in a week long loop out of New York through POortland and Montpelier, and there is quite a lot to see. So what I'd first suggest you do is sit down with your travel partners and go over the discussions listed here, and of course the links therein. Then when you've all got a working list of the places that appeal most to you (and some wiggle room) we can work on finding the best and most scenic routes to connect them all.

If you are going to do Ben & Jerry's in Waterbury, VT, you want to be sure and take a trip up Vermont 100 to Stowe, VT. It is one of the nicest towns in the state and the home of the magnificient Trapp Family Lodge (The Sound Of Music Trapp Family.) From Stowe, you can then take Highway 108 to the Smuggler's Notch State Park area.

East of Rutland, the Killington Peak area is very nice and you can take a ski lift to the top of the Peak.

In Woodstock, the Billings Farm and Museum is a great stop and includes the Marsh, Billings, Rockefeller Mansion. Nearby, Queeche Gorge is a very scenic spot. On the way to Woodstock, there is a very nice covered bridge at Taftsville which, as I recall, is the largest covered bridge in Vermont. For more covered bridges, Pittsford is home to several. Pittsford is north of Rutland on US 7.

If you get in to New Hampshire's White Mountains area, both Franconia Notch State Park and Crawford Notch State Park are very scenic areas. A drive up the Mount Washington Auto Highway off of Highway 16 north of Bartlett is great fun.

    Have A Great Trip!!
