    Doc Springer wasn’t the first who operated this site. He was just a squatter (on Federal land) who created a health spa there. Once he had the buildings built, the sly government agency that actually “owned” the land took it back. The US Army managed Fort Soda Springs dating all the way back to 1867. It’s certainly possible that native American travelers knew of the spot as well. As to the healing quality of the minerals – the jury’s still out on that one.

    I’m a fan of the place, I’ve been going there for the last 25 years, but it’s no more special than any of 100+ special sites in the Mojave.
