Flying into Boston for the marathon, have booked flights out of New York 2 weeks later. Looking for ideas for a few days in between Boston and New York travelling with 18 month old baby. Any suggestions? Experiences with car seats for hire cars.

Welcome to the RoadTrip America Forum!
About how many days will you have "in between" Boston and New York? New England is a pretty compact place relative to the rest of the United States, so you have quite a few options (weather permitting) of where you could head out to for some different experiences.
It's still fairly chilly in most spots in New England at that time of year, so take that into consideration. One thing you didn't mention is how many people will be in your party (I at first thought it was just you and the 18-month old) and what types of things you are interested in doing.
Most car rental places will rent a car seat to you for use. There's usually an extra charge. However, it's been so long since I've traveled with babies (that may change with the arrival of the first grandbaby) that I couldn't tell you the price. When you are getting quotes, be sure to get your quotes with a car seat rental included.
