Arrive JFK on the 18th Jan and don't fly home till the 27th Jan. We've been to NY many times so now we're thinking of a little road trip up state. Looking for historical/romantic towns. Any suggestions?

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!
New York State, once you get above, say, Peekskill, is replete with quaint, historic, and just plain interesting towns. To name just a few:
West Point. Home to the United States Military Academy and the site of Benedict Arnold's betrayal of his country.
Lake George and Ticondeeroga. Cute towns in gorgeous settings on lake fronts and the sites of a couple of forts important in both the French and Indian EWars and the Revolution.
Lake Placid. Home to two Winter Olympics and smack dab in the middle of one of the great wild areas remaining in the eastern US, Adirondack Park.
Alexandria Bay (or thereabouts). As a pied-a-terre to explore the Thousand Islands region.
Seneca Falls. One of many old towns along the Erie Canal and the site of the start of the Women's Suffrage Movement.
Niagara Falls. Of course.
Chautauqua. Site of a 19th century Utopian Society
Jamestown. Home to the Dezi (Arnaz) and Luci (Lucille Ball) museum.
Watkins Glen. Great old race track (formerly the site of the US Grand Prix back in the Jackie Stewart days) and the namesake canyon (glen) back up through some interesting rock formations.
Elmira. Soaring capital of the US.
Ithaca. Home to Cornell University, Cayuga Lake, and a waterfall even taller than Niagara.
Catskill State Park. Another great forested mountain preserve.
And you're back to New York City
