  1. Default San Fran/Route 66/Grand Canyon/Hawaii

Hi there, I'm planning a big trip for May/June 2012 and wonder if anyone can give me some advice on how to structure my trip. I'll be travelling from the UK and have 21 days. I want to spend 4 days in San Fran and then maybe another couple on the drive down to Los Angeles. Thinking of flying to LA and spending 3 or 4 days here, taking in an overnight trip to Grand Canyon. I also want to fly to Hawaii and spend around 8 days visiting a couple of the islands. However, not sure which way round I should approach the trip - start in LA or San Fran and whether anyone thinks it's just too ambitious for one trip?

    Welcome!

I would fly into SF, and rent a car for return in LA when you are ready to leave. I'd spend a couple days driving down the coast (CA-1) almost to LA, then head over to the Grand Canyon and then to LA, possibly seeing some inland attractions on the way to the GC or the way back to LA.

    Welcome to the RTA Forum!

Does the 21 days include your time in Hawaii or is that separate?

You could certainly make some sort of trip work, although one thing you need to keep in mind is that the Grand Canyon is not an overnight trip from LA. Its about a 10 hour drive, each way, so it really becomes a 3 day trip just to drive there, see it, and drive back.

A loop that also includes the places you mentioned as well as Yosemite, Death Valley, and Las Vegas is very popular - and in fact the most popular trip idea on this forum. That might be possible, although if you only have 21 days total and you want to spend 8 of your days in SF and LA, and 8 more in Hawaii, that would probably be a bit much.

Los Angeles to the Grand Canyon is almost 500 miles and will take over 7 hours to drive one way. It's a very long drive if you are only spending one night at the Grand Canyon!
