Thread: CT to Peru

  1. Default CT to Peru

This would be impossible to do by myself so If anyone wants to split costs on a road trip to South America let me know. I'm a 23 year old female from CT and I would be absolutely terrified if I went alone. However, I am staying there for several months and would love to have my car. I want to do this in January. Let me know if your interested.

Default You Need to Look into This

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

Taking your car to Peru is not as simple as just getting in and driving there. First, there is no road. The Pan-American Highway does not connect Central and South America due to the Darien Gap. So you will have to ship any car at least across that section, so you might as well look into the cost of shipping your car by boat from the States to Peru. Check out any of the several RoRo (Roll on, Roll off) carriers who do this. Many ship from major east coast ports.

Just as important, Peru has restrictions on what cars can be brought into the country. They can't be too old (I've seen this listed variously as 5 year and 10 year age limits) and charges an import duty that can be as much as 35% of the value (Blue Book retail) of your car. You will need to check with the Peruvian embassy, consulate, or website to get official details.

Another thought, and I must admit that I have no idea on this, is that you need to make sure that the fuel that is available in Peru is adequate to run your engine for 'several months' without doing damage to it. Engines put in cars for the American market have very specific requirements in terms of additives and octane that may not be met by gas sold in other countries.
