  1. Default Flattest Route from LA to NYC?

I'm planning on a trip later this year which will be part of a fuel economy demonstration project, and so I'm interested in finding a fairly flat route between these points, as flat favors fuel economy.

Even though I-40 is a few miles farther than I-80, it looks like it might be flatter.

    Any route specific suggestions appreciated.

    Welcome to the RTA Forum!

Since all interstates are designed to eliminate sharp curves and steep slopes, I can pretty much assure you that driving more miles will have a much bigger impact on your fuel useage than the route you select.

But if you'd like to continue to explore your options, RTA's Map Center includes a tool where you can see the elevation across your entire trip. Just plot your route and then click the "show elevation" button. Sounds like it is exactly what you are looking for.

The flattest route is I-10 to I-95, but that sure would take you a long way out of the way.
