Driving from Portland to Chicago

Hi! I am driving from Portland to Chicago in July and I wondering what is the best way to drive? I did it last summer and took I-80 all the way across but then I was driving a newer car and now I am not, so I cant go as far and as fast per day and I would rather be driving thru a more populated area than I-80 which was very remote. Does anyone have any suggestions?

We get more and more requests that simply do not have enough information to offer any useful advice. Yours, unfortunately is a case in point. You tell us nothing about how much time you have, only that you can't "go as far and as fast per day" As far as what? As fast as what? You say that I-80 is very remote, but how so? You say you want "more populated". More populated than what? Because the basic thing you haven't told us, and without which we don't have a clue is: Which Portland?

I apologize for not being more specific. I live in Portland Oregon and I have as much time as I need to get there but hopefully not too long! I drove there last summer and I made it in three days. But I also did about 90 out on the open road in the Dakotas with all the other traffic but this time I am driving an older car and I dont think I will be able to drive that fast.

I-84 to I-80 is the shortest, fastest, and most direct - and any other route is going to be just as remote. Just keep it down to the speed limit and don't worry. You shouldn't be driving 90 anywhere in the US anyway - I was stopped 2 years ago on a very remote section of I-94 in Montana for doing 81 in a 75. Being sensible, it will take you 4 days.
