Chicago to Mt. Rushmore - Need suggestions for wacky things to see!

Hey Everyone,

The wife and I are planning a fun drive to see Mt. Rushmore sometime in the late Summer 2010. We love to see silly offbeat things while on the road so if you have suggestions, we'd really appreciate it. BTW, we went on a roadtrip last summer to mid/lower Wisconsin and have seen all the wacky stuff between Chicago and Minnesota, so we're looking for a alternative route to take as well. Time isn't a factor so we can take a long route there.

The first 2 things that come to mind are the Corn Palace in Mitchell SD and Wall Drug. Both are right off I-90. If you take I-80 through IA you can stop at Iowa 80, the world's largest truck stop. It's in Walcott, just west of the Quad Cities.

Thanks glc! I forgot about Wall Drug and I've never heard of Corn Palace or the truck stop. Good suggestions.

Well, there are at least two routes on our new Road Trip Routes section that would be of interest to you:

Pierre to the Badlands (including Wall Drug)
Rapid City to Deadwood (including Mount Rushmore)

Check out Custer State Park while you are at Mount Rushmore. It is just a few miles south. It has incredible scenery, a huge herd of buffalo, a wild herd of donkeys, and many prairie dog towns. Nature at its best!

While on your way west, stop in LeMars Iowa. They have the Ice Cream Capital of the world there, the Blue Bunny Ice Cream museum and store. It is really a cool thing to see.
