    Default To Be Honest: Too Bad and No

    I am truly sorry to hear about the canceling of ferry service between Maine and Nova Scotia. As much as I enjoy a good RoadTrip, I love to throw in a 'cruise' or two wherever I can, be it a quick crossing of a small stream on a boat that strains to carry three cars or one of these open water behemoths. At least you still have two other crossings in your itinerary. And while that itinerary is jam-packed, I can't find a single thing I'd leave out of it. The most time consuming destinations are those that are well worth the time and effort. Just resign yourself that this trip will be a once-over-lightly scouting trip, and plan to come back again.

    Thanks again AZBuck! Good to know I am heading on the right (though jam packed) track! My camera will be busy preserving it for mulling over more slowly afterwards! I love ferries too...

    Default Bar Harbor to Saint John, New Brunswick- Where to stay?

    Hi;

    I plan to be travelling from Bar Harbor, ME to catch the ferry from St. John, New Brunswick to Digby, Nova Scotia in mid August. The ferry leaves at midday (or around 11pm). So we will need to be in 3 hours driving distance of St John maximum overnight.

    Any suggestions as which location is a good place to stay overnight? St Andrews looks a good distance. Or does St John have enough to see to make it worth getting there the previous afternoon? Will have spent time up along the coast of Maine, and will spend time in Nova Scotia, PEI, and Quebec afterwards.

    Any recommendations for budget cottages or similar (2 rooms) would be welcome as well...

    Many thanks,
    Phil

    Default Somewhere in the Middle

    You could probably make the drive from Bar Harbor to St. John in 5 hours. Unfortunately, there aren't many sizeable cities on the way. Calais (pronounced CAL-iss, not ca-LAY), ME is your best option. That would still leave you a 2 hour drive, plus the border crossing. In the Calais area are Quoddy Head, the easternmost point of the United States, and Campobello Island, FDR's retreat which is in Canada but reachable by bridge from Lubec, ME.
