Hi Pete in Manchester UK, planning a 30 town road trip by motorcycle to every USA town called Manchester. West coast to east coast, and all in between.
Finding it hard to locate web based mapping that will allow multi town planning, route and mileage. Even harder to find paper road maps of USA here in UK.

I need interesting places, people and attractions on route, crazy food, sports and events between Jan-April 2010)

Best roads, best scenery etc etc.

Enjoy your trip. We went to Manchester Tennessee last year and the people we spoke to never knew there was a Manchester in the UK !

Since you are not going till Jan, why not purchase an American Road Atlas. These are available on the web from places such as Rand Mc Nally, AAA, etc. You may even find that your local Automobile Club sells one. Then go through the index and find all the Manchesters and map your route. I have found the National Geographic wall map of the USA by far the best. And by the way, take your local Automobile Club membership with you. It will give you access to free maps and travelling information from the AAA, once you arrive in the US.

As for what you want to see and do, and the people you want to meet, I can only suggest what I did the first time I came, and to some extend still do....

Hit the road and stop at the Tourist Information place wherever you happen to be. Go to a cafe and buy a coffee, and speak to the locals. Join others at a table, rather than sit by yourself. If you are so inclined, go to a pub and speak to the locals. That is where you will find the type of thing you are looking for. They are rarely found with forward planning. One just stumbles upon them.

Another place to find information about local sites and activities is the bulletin board such as you find in large stores and supermarkets.... and elsewhere. Over the years I have found much of interest on these. This is especially so in small communities.
