Two week Seattle to San Deigo Rough schedule - overambitious?

Good afternoon.

We're heading to Seattle on Friday and flying back from San Diego on Saturday 12th September so have two glorious weeks to fill.

We've put our heads together and come up with a rough idea of what we want to see and it goes like this (in approximate order).

From Seattle, we'll head to Mount Rainer and drive around for a day heading west back to Interstate 5. From there we'll take in Mount St. Helens and then drive onwards to Portland and maybe take a side excursion up the Colombia River Gorge.

From Portland, we'll head coastwards to Tillamook and stick to the coast through Oregon, before heading inland to Crater Lake (possibly via Oregon Caves).

From there it will be down to Lassen Volcanic and then back to the coast to Redwood National Park and then hauling it down the coast to San Francisco.

The idea will then be to take Highway 1, past Monterey and Carmel and then down the coast past Big Sur.

Before hitting LA, we want to head inland to try and take in Kings Canyon, Sequoia and Yosemite before heading to Vegas.

Then finally, on to San Diego via Joshua Tree.


It does seem a lot and the distances are going to be pretty hideous on some days but what do people think?

You could easily drive from Seattle to San Diego in three days, and I've done enjoyable 'once around the U.S.' trips in three weeks, so with two full weeks to make it down the coast I think you're in for a very enjoyable time. Just relax and savor each day's activities. In the end, if you find yourself a little short of time, you can always just jump on I-5 and be in San Diego in a day or two, but don't even worry about that while you're having fun \exploring all the great places on the way.

You've got a lot of time to get down the coast. Consider taking one non-driving day somewhere in the middle. It's amazing how much it helps everyone's mood!

You may want to look at some of the back-and-forth between the coast and the mountains...

For instance, you may want to continue down the coast into the Redwood Parks in northern CA, then backtrack up to Crater Lake (and Oregon Caves).

From there, you could shoot down to Lassen, and continue down the interior to Yosemite/Sequoia/Kings Canyon, before returning to the coast in SF.

From there, continue down the coast to SD.

You'd miss the northern CA coast, but you cut out some of the back-and-forth/backtracking.
