Been there, fought off the mosquitoes. Headwaters of the Missouri State Park in Montana. Where the Gallatin, Jefferson, and Madison rivers meet.

    Naw; WAY too much water.

    Default What it's not

It can't be the Ohio River, (also a group 2 river)

The Tennessee River -- I don't think so... but it is close to NP

Default Seems like you've figured out the "group 2" grouping...

So you only have 50 "possibles".

You're going to hate yourself when you figure this out.

Default The Arkansas River in Colorado

National Park eh? The topography is right for central Colorado where the Arkansas River starts -- but not in a NP.

    Hmmmm.

    Default The Yellowstone River

The Yellowstone River is a feeder of the Missouri -- but it's headwaters are outside of the park.

Default Ya got to be kidding me!

This is the Colorado River? But that would be a group 1 river....

I never knew that the Colorado River's headwaters were in Rocky Mountain National Park -- I gotta look at the map again!

    Great Puzzle!

Group 1: rivers NOT named for states.
Group 2: rivers named for states.

This is the early stages of the mighty Colorado, in Rocky Mountain National Park, not far from it's source in La Poudre Pass.

Note: I never said it's source was in a NP (although I think it is), just that the SHOT was taken in a NP; as mentioned, RMNP on the western side.

That "you have 50 possibles" should have set off a bell ringing somewhere...

And yes, I chose my candidates to leave open the possibility I was categorizing based on where it drained, or other criteria.

Other "group 2" rivers: Missouri, Mississippi, etc.

    Multiple part puzzle:

    1) What is this?
    2) Where is it?
    3) Why does the photo have dark smudges in the corners?
    4) (extra credit/clue) Why did this trip get me into serious trouble?

Note: the color in this photo IS NOT the result of Photoshop (or other post-processing) manipulation... this is pretty much what it looks like.

Default Too many projects at once

    Don,

I plainly missed the "50 state" clue -- I plead trying to work on too many projects at once.

The blurred parts of the photo look like you were shooting through a chain link fence.

A settling pond of something hazardous looking

    Still cogitating.
