Going from Phoenix to LA with a family (1 kid). Any interesting items to see on the way to and on the way back from? Also, planning to drive in the night and stop half way. Any good places to lodge for the night? Any advice would be much appreciated

short trip

The trip between Phoenix and LA is only 400 miles and can quite easily be done in about 7 hours, depending upon exactly where in each metro area you are going and how bad traffic is during your trip.
If you want to break it up, the palm springs area would probably be your best bet, with a short detour to Joshua Tree National Park being just off the main route.
