10,473 Miles, 48 States, 16 Days

Wish I had found this site earlier. Didn't start looking until I saw the 'record attempt' at all 48 states. In January 2007, I took a trip to all 48 states, including to-and-from my home in Steubenville, Ohio in 16 days.

Although I picked up my wife on my way back through Ohio, I was the only driver of the trip.

And I thought my doing the 48-state trip in 27.5 days was crazy.

Even more so that you braved the harsh winter storms. I noticed your Montana pic was in a blizzard!

And it looks like you were the only one at Four Corners. I've never been there when it's not busy.

16 days! And what really gets me is you just kinda did this on the spur of the moment. Who does that? I guess someone who is somewhat psychotic? LOL

I will definitely spend some time reading through your website. I only read the entry about my state (Washington). Just an FYI, if you had ventured a bit farther west into Oregon, you would have seen forests going all the way down to the river's edge, particularly on the Washington side. You were just in the desert areas of WA/OR.

I'm in awe at your stamina. Oh, to be that young again! :)

I have been planning a 48 state trip for the last two months and your trip report could be helpful.
I have been working on this map, starts in Wisconsin and ends in Breckenridge, Minnesota.
Tolal miles to Minnesota is 7909 miles and then another 540 miles back home. I have been working on this
map to find the shortest (quickest) way to hit all 48 states. I am hoping to do this trip before September.

I am doing this ride on a motorcycle and I am hoping to do it in less than 10 days.

Rollin', I've been down I-40 many times now through New Mexico, Arizona, and into California. If you've never been there before, it is nice. But, there is something serene about being in the middle of nowhere.

Nevada Highway 140 and Oregon Highway 140 are probably the most desolate roads in the country. In 111 miles of Nevada I saw 13 cars. In 67 more miles in Oregon, I saw 11 more. 24 cars in 178 miles. Not once did a car come up on me, or did I ever come up on a car. Despite all the times I stopped for photos. It was just 24 lonesome souls driving east/south on 140.

As for Four Corners, it was eerie being the only person there. Other than the girl in the shack that took my $3 entry fee. But, it was January 27th at 9-10am local, a Saturday. But, I didn't have to deal with other people while photographing the monument, etc.

It was very fun and slightly scary driving through Lookout Pass in Idaho/Montana in the blizzard. But, one of the better memories of the trip.

I've been to Western Oregon/Washington since this trip, and I agree, it's beautiful. But, in your head, us Easterners, don't equate Oregon with a desert. Still nice, all on its own. And I did drive through Bend (although at night).

I'm currently going through every county I've been in for the Extra Milers Club. I know I've hit at least 1,000.

And, a note about the City of Murals. I love them. My favorite has got to be Dean Martin on the Krogers building (they hold the festival in the parking lot). Never been to it (they hold 2 or 3 festivals at the same time in town, and with it so packed, I tend to just stay home or leave town). Close seconds would be on the side of the Huntington Bank building downtown, as well as the painting on the side of the building on Market Street (the old dirt main street visage).

It's a great 'tour' of the city. Just down go downtown at night :)
