Indianapolis to New York

I'm heading out to New York State in July. I will be camping out of my Element.

I'm know I will be staying a few days outside Oneonta, NY.

I'm looking for information on two things....

1. Is there a campground outside NYC that someone could recommend? Also, I'd like to find a place to park my car and take the train or bus into NYC to spend the day sightseeing by subway. What are my options? Suggestions? I want to spend about 3 days seeing NYC, but don't want the added expense of a hotel necessarily.

2. I also want to head up to Niagra Falls and see the area. Suggested campgrounds that might provide transportation to the falls? How many days should I plan to spend around the area to enjoy it?

There is a RV campground, directly across the river from Manhattan that I really like, but I don't know if they will let you tent camp there. It is called Liberty Harbor and here is an older article, but you can get the contact info there.
