Phoenix to Oceanside, Ca

Which is the best route to take to Oceanside from Phoenix? Either I-10 or I-8? I've taken both routes before but can't remember the pros/cons of each since it's been so long. I HATE driving anywhere near LA area so that's why I'm considering the I-8 route instead.

The mileage and time is probably not significantly different, but wanted to know the terrain and any other major concerns if taking the I-8 route.

I've actually got another option that I've used when traveling from San Diego to Phoenix. Head over to I-15, and just south of Temecula, take CA-79 and CA-371 as a short cut over to Palm Desert, and take I-10 the rest of the way across. Its nice and scenic drive, especially going down into the desert valley as you approach Palm Desert, and saves you the trouble of going all the way north to Riverside to connect to I-10.

Otherwise, I-8 would be just fine. You'll be dealing with some mountain driving just east of San Diego, but then your mostly dealing with desert and farmland until you get to Gila Bend and cut back north towards to PHX area.
