Help planning road trip from Houston, TX to Orlando, FL

Hello,

We are a couple in our early fifties and want to drive from Houston, TX to Orlando, FL, probably with a stop in Destin, FL or some nice beach in FL for some relaxation. This is during May 2019.

We may be taking our pet Dogs - medium sized, and want to drive leisurely and break journey for the night outbound and incoming.

Do you all have any advice on interesting stops for food, scenic views, breaks, attractions etc. are requested, please?

I think you've very much got the right idea about splitting up your drive over two days, and the fact that the distance between Houston and Orlando is somewhat less than what can be comfortably covered in two days of driving means that you can easily stop in tow different places, one east-bound and another west-bound. Unfortunately, Destin is just too far from Houston and too close to Orlando to be one of those preferred stopover points, so that does present a bit of a problem, but it's not insurmountable. If Destin is not a main destination in and of itself, then I'd suggest looking at Pascagoula MS and Penscola FL as two possibilities for mid-drive stopovers. I-10 dips close to the shore at both of these spots so that the 'detour' to the Gulf Coast would be minimal and both are close enough to the actual mid-point of your trip (roughly Mobile AL) that your two driving days on either leg would still be easily doable in a day.

You won't have a lot of extra time on either drive to spend sight-seeing but there are always options for short stops along the Interstates. If you have any particular interests, let us know and we may be ale to suggest other locations that may be more suitable for you.
