August road trip from New York to St Louis and back

We have 2 1/2 days to get to st louis, a few days there and then 4 days back to New York.

Travelling with 3 teenagers.

We figured travelling thru Ohio - either going to Canton or Cleveland to get there and on the way back going thru Kentucky, Shenandoah National Park.
Wanted a mix of fun attractions, museums, and some nature where we can stop along the way, or lake etc.
Can anyone give us some advice about what to do.
