  1. Default Atlanta to Cooperstown, NY

We have to head to Cooperstown for baseball this summer from the Atlanta area and want to leave early to be able to make some stops along the way that will be fun for our family. We have five children ages 14, 12, 8, and 3 yr old twins. I want some stops that will be good for all of us and to make some memories. We can even do some on the way back. Are there any suggestions for us? I greatly appreciate any and all suggestions.

    Welcome to RTA!

How many days do you have to get there, and to get back?

Cooperstown is at least a 2-day drive (about 475 miles per day) from Atlanta. So you should have more than 2 days to travel in each direction, when adding in some sightseeing.

Shenandoah National Park's Skyline Drive comes to mind -- but that's 5 hours from S--->N on that road, so you see what I mean about adding in sightseeing time.

    Default As Noted: Time Matters

Without knowing how much time you have for each leg, and without knowing anything about the interests of you and your children (other than baseball), it's hard to make meaningful recommendations. What we can point out, as Donna did, is that it is a minimum two day drive if you take the most direct all-Interstate route. Actually, depending on exactly where you're leaving from in the Atlanta area and the state of I-85 through the city at that time, you may want to look at taking I-75 up through Chattanooga and Knoxville to I-40 and then I-81 rather than the more 'direct' I-85 to I-77 at Charlotte and then I-81. Going viaChattanooga/Knoxville adds about 25 miles to your trip but may be worth it depending on your local situation in Atlanta. Either way, it will be a full two-day drive between Atlanta and Cooperstown with only a few short stops each day to let the kids (and drivers!) get some fresh air and exercise. If you want to do more than that, there are certainly opportunities, but we'd need to know your final choice of route(s) and how much time you'd have.
