South African looking for a great road trip experience!

Hi Everyone,

It is so great to discover this forum! I am looking for some advice, I am here for a holiday and would LOVE to do a road trip. It would be good to get some help/thoughts on what would be the best thing to do over a 5 day period. I would be leaving from Sausalito and not sure whether I should go North towards Oregan or South towards Death Valley. The dates would be after Thanksgiving so next week. Looking at the weather report, it looks like it is going to rain/snow in the Klamath Valley area which is where I think I would head towards if going North. My worries are that if it is raining all week, North may not be the best option. Any suggestions on a wonderful road trip would be so welcome!! Thank you.

Have you thought about Yosemite? It's only about 4-5 hours drive from the Sausalito area, and absolutely beautiful. You could also take in Sequoia National Park or go over to Death Valley -- it's your trip, and though 5 days seems like a long time, it will take you a day to get back to Sausalito from DVNP.

Why not drive down the coast highway (CA-1) from San Francisco toward LA? At San Luis Obispo, pick up US-101 to Buellton, then CA-246 into Solvang. You can then head to Santa Barbara and take US-101 to CA-126, go through Santa Clarita to CA-14, take that north to US-395 to Death Valley. Out of Death Valley, take US-395 to Lake Tahoe, then US-50 back to Sacramento, I-80 to CA-37 to US-101 back to Sausalito. If you have time, you can go to Yosemite by taking CA-49 off of US-50 to CA-120. Keep an eye on the weather and road conditions, you may not want to head to Tahoe.
