Hwy-50 is very empty. It is also beautiful. The climb through the Sierras is gorgeous, and nicer than the one on I-80, IMHO. Also, 50 goes by Lake Tahoe. I have never taken 80 past Reno so I can't tell you about that, but there are many things to see on 50. Suggestions might include Carson City, which has the Nevada State Museum, two different Stone Age rock carving sites at Grimes Point and Hickinson Petroglyphs, and Great Basin National Park just south of 50 on the eastern end of Nevada. Also, the town of Eureka is just lovely.
If you want speed, 80 will be quicker, at least until you get over the mountains. If you want scenery, 50.
I would, however, keep a close eye on weather conditions. One or the other road may close as snow falls on the Sierras.
Feel free to e-mail me about this trip.
