  1. Default Atlanta - Niagara Falls - Washington DC Road Trip

    Hello everyone,

We're planning a road trip to Niagara Falls from Atlanta in the week before Labor day. On the first day, we're stopping by somewhere in OH (I'm thinking around OH Amish country) to spend the night, then continuing again the next day to Niagara Falls NY.

Can you please advise of what the best things to do in that area? We're planning on spending the night there. Unfortunately, one of us does not have a passport so we have no plans of crossing to Canada.

On the way to DC (to visit family), we're planning on stopping by Letchworth State park (heard great things!) and spending the night somewhere in that area (maybe Corning?).

Some facts about us: we've previously done a big road trip last year (ATL-Gettysburg-Lancaster county-Philly-NYC-DC-VA) so we're looking for places we haven't been yet. We like nature and non-touristy places. We also like to eat :), especially local, hidden places. We don't mind museums (if it's really worth it) but we prefer outdoors and picturesque views.

Do you have any suggestions for places to stop by, restaurants, attractions or routes to take? We have 10 days to kill.

    Thank you in advance!

Default Some Notes That Might Help

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

Just a few ideas that might make your trip a bit more enjoyable... First off. I would think that getting to Ohio Amish country around New Philadelphia is possible in a days drive from Atlanta, but just. If you plan to take advantage of being in that area, you should plan to do so on the morning of the next day rather than when you arrive, late in the evening, of your initial day. In the Niagara area, while it's a shame you won't all be able to go over to the Canadian side, be sure to get to Niagara Falls State Park on Goat Island, and you should also check out Fort Niagara State Park.

Depending on how you plan on driving from Niagara to Washington, you'll be passing through some relatively scenic areas of central Pennsylvania, especially routes such as US-219 down through Allegheny National Forest. But some of the best will be as you approach DC from the west via I-70. But you'll need to get off the highway to explore the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park and Fort Frederick State Park in the Big Pool MD area, and Antietam National Battlefield a little closer into Washington.

Finally, as you head back home, you might want to consider using some of the great four-lane divided highways that are so prevalent in the South such as US-29 which could conceivably get you all the way from (roughly) DC to Atlanta.
