Default Looking for lake campground near Gettysburg/SE Pa/N Baltimore area

    Hi all,

We will be spending most of a week in Pa going to Gettysburg area for a few days and would like to also include a few days at a nice lake campground to kayak and relax. Trip is not finalized at all, but looking to do this in first week of Oct or so. This area near Gettysburg/Lancaster/Eastern Pa is not heavy on lakes at all, but we really don't need much. Were traveling in an RV, so we need campground to be on water so we can easily carry kayaks. Anybody familiar enough with the area to make a recommendation on one? There are several small state parks in the area that have lakes, but campgrounds are nowhere near the water. It can be up to a couple hours from the Gettysburg area, but we don't want to head too far east, cause home is Cols, OH Thanks! Shelley

    Default Some Great Opportunities

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

There are a surprisingly large number of great camping opportunities in the Gettysburg including Catoctin Mountain National Park (home to Camp David), the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park and Fort Frederick State Park (both of which have campsites directly on the Potomac River). There are also several nearby state parks including Gunpowder Falls and Cunningham Falls in Maryland, and Codorus and Gifford Pinchot in Pennsylvania.

Thanks AZBuck. I have already checked out a few of the ones you mention, but will look up the rest. I know nothing about the Patomac... Good for kayaking you think?

    Default Paddling on the Potomac

Yes, the Potomac is well known for its canoeing and kayaking. The section along which the C&O Canal and Fort Frederick parks fall is considered the 'middle' Potomac.
