road trip San Diego to Grand Canyon To Waco Texas -Alamo and ???back

First road trip to Baylor University... Will travel san diego to williams for the grand canyon train trip... Is there something in between I should stop and see to make it easier on family? After a few days in Grand Canyon we will head towards Waco Texas. What is there in between so that we can map our route? We are planning about 2 weeks. Appreciate input. We are also studying US history so natural and historical sites are appreciated. My previous trips have always been west coast... so those of you who are familiar with this "route", I welcome suggestions.
