Road trip suggestions in North America!

Hi everybody,

My wife and I are planning to do a 2-3 weeks road trip in North America this summer (July or August).
Originally, we planned to do a Deep South road trip, but from reading a range of posts in here, it seems that it will be too hot and humid to be enjoyable (is that true?). So now we are looking to benefit from the vast experience and expertise in here to figure out where to do a road trip instead :)

We are both in the end of our twenties and enjoy beautiful nature and landscapes, interesting cultures (however, not too fond of museums, though :)), charming cities, delicious cousine and nice weather. We are traveling from Denmark and have previously visited New York and also done a road trip in California and Nevada (San Francisco, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and San Diego).

I hope you can help us determine where to go in USA and/or Canada for a road trip this summer.

The deep south could certainly be hot and humid in late summer, but people do live and work in the weather there year round. Only you can decide if the weather is something you want to avoid, but there are people who do enjoy it. Certainly, there are lots of great attractions in the south that are at a higher elevation and avoid some of the heat.

Of course, the Southwest/Mountain West is the most popular place to go if you like nature and landscapes. From Arizona, up into Utah and Colorado and onto Wyoming and Montana there are no shortage of amazing National Parks with sites like no where else on earth.

But even that's just the tip of the iceburg. The "where should I go" is the most impossible question we get, because you can find all of the things you're looking for almost everywhere in North America. Probably the best thing we can tell you is to spend a lot of time looking at maps and other travel resources and just look at your wide, wide array of options until something really jumps out at you.

Without getting into a lot of new detail for your specific trip, Let me first point you to a number of previous discussions that cover some of the most popular RoadTrips in America. In all of them you'll find natural beauty, interesting cities, and local cuisine. Weather will variable, but yes, the South can get quit hot and humid in summer.

Lake Michigan/Great Lakes
Mashington DC to Niagara Falls
Upper Midwest

Of course those aren't all the options you have, just a few to let you see what kinds of choices you have.

Whereas I agree that the south can be very hot and humid in July and August, they are not the only places. I have been in the northern and eastern States, Massachusetts, Carolinas, Iowa, Minnesota etc. in those months, when the temperature has been in excess of 100F and the humidity in the 90%s. The fact is they are HOT months and if you want to avoid the heat and humidity, you would be best to travel in late spring or early summer.

The Pacific Northwest has some great weather in July/August and plenty of sights to see. Seattle and Portland are enjoyable cities, there are national parks and the scenic coastline. Very easy to do a circle trip. Venturing over into Vancouver, BC or Victoria, BC are also options (by train from Seattle to Vancouver, but make reservations in advance and by ferry to Victoria, leaving your vehicle in Port Angeles is an option).

I would agree that the PNW is a viable option with much to do, although with 3 weeks you could find yourself as far south as San Francisco. Olympic NP, Mt Rainier, Mt Hood, Mt St Helens, the Historic Columbia River Gorge and some wonderful coastline to explore. If you ventured further south you could see the coastal Redwoods of California and perhaps Lassen volcanic NP, first heading south down the coast and returning on an inland route. That would put the Ocean side viewpoints on your side of the road.
