  1. Default Illinois to New York, Boston Cooperstown and back

Hello! I'm planning our first road trip to the east coast from central IL and would appreciate any help, suggestions.

Trip goes from central IL to Gettysburg, to New York City, to Boston, to Cooperstown, maybe Niagara Falls and back. Looking for places to stay, (prefer suite, 5 of us) things to do and see etc.

    Thank you!

    Welcome to RTA!

Do you have paper maps? If you don't, that's your first tip -- get some, either in the form of an atlas such as Rand McNally, maps from AAA (free if you're a member), or similar.

Places to stay with a suite for 5.....most of the major chains (Choice, Wyndham, Hilton, etc) have suites or a brand that is all suites.

Cooperstown itself is not loaded with lodging choices, we noticed as we toured through there a few years back, especially not of the type with suites. However, the Holiday Inn and the Best Western Plus both seem to have suites.

If you want to go to Niagara Falls, it's best seen from the Canadian side. If you want to go into Canada, adults will need passports and children will need birth certificates.

Thank you both for your suggestions.

    Default Some Stray Thoughts

You haven't said who will be participating in this RoadTrip or what everybody's interests are, but judging from the places you've already included in your itinerary here are a few more sites along your general route that you might enjoy: the Indianapolis Motor Speedway; The US Air Force Museum in Dayton OH; Fort Necessity National Battlefield, Fort Frederick outside Big Pool MD, and Catoctin Mountain National Park (these three would require a slight detour using US-40/I-68/I-70/MD-66/US-15 on the way to Gettysburg); Hershey PA - chocolate tours and amusement park; Old Sturbridge Village in central Massachusetts; the Erie Canal across central New York; and the Women’s Rights National Historical Park in Seneca Falls NY.

Beyond that, it will depend on how you return home from Niagara Falls. Assuming you all have your passports n order, the shorter route is actually through Canada, crossing back into the US at Sarnia/Port Huron north of Detroit and using I-69/I-94/I-55 back into central Illinois. Otherwise you're looking at I-90/I-271/I-71/I-70/I-74(?).
