Spring cross country road trip 2016

My husband and I are planning a 2 month road trip from SC across the South and Southwest. Then up thru the west coast. Have not yet decided on the route back yet except that we want to see some of Wyoming, Montana, and Mt. Rushmore. We plan to camp mostly. In AZ we will stay with family some, camp some. The same with CA and WA. We are leaving SC in the latter part of March and spending our first three days in Clarksdale, MS. Any ideas on places to stop, campsites, etc. would be GREATLY appreciated. You've got two months and everything between South Carolina and Washington state at your disposal. Which pretty much means that you've got the entire country to choose from. That's literally thousands, if not tens of thousands, of "places to stop, campsites, etc." There's simply no way we can give you meaningful suggestions with that kind of options list and no idea of what you would find interesting. So the first part of the planning load has to be carried by you. Get yourself a good map of the US. Find at least a handful of places that you want to see between the 'South', 'Southwest', "Montana, Wyoming' and back home. That will give you at least some idea of what your basic route will be and us some idea of what you would like to see. We can work from there, but we do need at least that much to go on.

Start with maps. Not GPS, not software, not Google, but real honest-to-god paper maps that show you your entire route, that you can mark up (and erase), that you can stick pins in, and that show something about the land you'll be driving through. Those are your essential tool in any RoadTrip planning process. Start by marking all the places you know you want to visit. Then connect the dots. Then look for more places of interest and scenic routes along the lines connecting the dots. Repeat until you've got as many sites and roads as you think you want.

Camping in late March and through April can be a bit iffy, weather-wise, especially in the north. Prepare for cold nights. By camping, do you mean tent- camping, or in an RV?

Some of our favorite tent-camping spots were always national forest and national park campgrounds, particularly national forest. Many times they are under-used, so they're not so crowded. State park campgrounds were also a choice. The vast majority of national park and forest campsites, and about half of the state parks, only had some form of restroom facilities (either pit toilets or flush), and no showers. So we tended to camp for 3-4 nights and then stay at a motel to clean up and enjoy a comfortable bed for a night.
