Road trip from San Jose to Yellowstone national park

Hello everyone,

We are planning to take a road trip from San Jose to Yellowstone NP. We are family of 4 people including a 7 yr old. My plan is -
1. Start from San Jose on morning of 26-Jun to Lake Tahoe
2. Spend entire day boating and sightseeing at Lake Tahoe and spend 26-Jun night at Reno.
3. On 27-Jun morning leave Lake Tahoe for Twin falls. Spend 27th night at Twin falls.
4. Leave for Yellowstone NP on 28-Jun morning and spend two days there.
5. Start from yellowstone on 30-Jun afternoon for Salt Lake City (SLC).
6. While returning I am planning to take a flight from SLC to San Jose on 01-Jul afternoon.

I need suggestions if this plan looks fine OR make any changes.

Hello and welcome to the RTA forums !

Your plan looks fine but a couple of points are that firstly, you could be looking at 6 hours driving from SJ to Reno via South lake Tahoe and whereas that will leave you some time to sight see, it won't give you an entire day boating. If you are starting out from Reno [not Tahoe] then you could perhaps look at pushing further that day, perhaps Idaho Falls to maximise your time in Yellowstone.

If you are renting a car, which seems to be the case as you are planning to fly back from SLC, then you will face a one way drop off fee on your rental that can be significantly more.

Yes I am renting a car and I have booked one way from SJC to SLC.
How if I drive early morning from San Jose to Lake Tahoe which shows me 4 hrs in Google maps and thereafter checkin hotel @ around 5:00pm. I have booked an hotel in Carson City.
Any suggestions after 6:30pm activities near the lake with family because I hope there will be ample sunshine till 9:00pm.

Also Is there any place I can halt between Lake Tahoe and Twin falls.
