    Default LA Construction

I took a little "day trip" on Saturday, from my home in San Diego County, up north to Burbank, CA. My purpose was a professional workshop. My routes were I-15 North, CA-78 West, I-5 North, CA-134 West, and a mile on CA-170 North.

There were two spots where CalTrans had closed down one lane of I-5, one was right around Norwalk. That wasn't bothersome at 8:00 on a Saturday morning, but southbound at 2:30 pm, it was a nightmare.

Even where there was no construction, traffic was a nightmare yesterday. It took me 2 hrs 10 min to make it northbound to my workshop. It took me 3 hrs 15 minutes to make it home (not including my stop in San Juan Capistrano for bathroom and something to eat).

Next time, I go back to my other route, which avoids I-5.

    I-15 to the 210, right?

Actually, I-15 to CA-60, to CA-57 which becomes I-210. That will drop me off on CA 134. The reason I didn't take that yesterday is that it adds about 10 or 15 miles to the trip. It still has places that it bogs down on Saturday afternoons, primarily I-210 in the Santa Anita area, and on I-15 between the CA-60 and Temescal Canyon Rd. But that usually isn't as bad as the I-5 was, Saturday.

If 15 backs up, how about 215 to 60? It's only 4 miles longer.

    Re: 215....in one word....YUCK.

I will deal with the traffic to avoid 215, which can be just as bad!

  6. Default West Los Angeles -- I405

Sad news after years of construction including closures, it will be an additional year!

Officials now aim to complete the bulk of the project by June 2014, with work on the problematic middle segment between Montana Avenue and Sunset Boulevard lasting perhaps until fall 2014,

  7. Default LA -- I5 and 2 interchange

Interchange is partially open with road construction to come. I5 and I 405 (in previous posting) are two major routes heading north through Los Angeles.

Caltrans announced that two lanes of the northbound 5 Freeway will reopen later this afternoon for the first time since a tanker truck fire at the freeway’s junction with the 2 Freeway on Saturday.

The I-5 is still a nightmare between CA-91 and I-605 (between Norwalk and Santa Fe Springs).

If you have to drive on I-5 between LA and Orange County, it is almost always quicker to take CA-91 and I-605 as a detour.

    Santa Monica (CA)

Many posters plan to visit Santa Monica including the pier and drive on Pacific Coast Highway. Allow extra time this summer. The construction on the Coast Highway (north boundary of SM) which involves closing lanes is now scheduled to end of June 30, 2015. This is the 3rd posted completion date and hope it is the final one. The CA Incline which runs between the Coast Highway and SM closed on April 20, 2015. There is also construction on streets in SM. So traffic is worse in SM especially around the pier, I 10 and PCH area.

Map of the closure and some alternative routes can be seen here.
