Céad Míle Fáilte! Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!
There are several ways to get from New York to Niagara that would be considered 'scenic', but here is one of my favorites. Leave the city on I-80 west to get out of the urban area without wasting a lot of time. When you get to East Stroudsburg PA, take US-209 north through the Delaware Water Gap up to Port Jervis NY. From there follow NY-42/NY-97 farther north along the Delaware River. At Hancock NY pick up NY-17 west along the 'Southern Tier'. That will take you right through Corning.
From Corning, I'd take a bit of a wandering route to make sure that I saw a couple of the best natural sights of western New York. Head north out of Corning on NY-414 to Watkins Glen and Watkins Glen State Park and then take county roads 23/114/96/87 west to Hammondsport and NY-54 to Bath and I-86/I-390 west and north (towards Rochester). Take Exit 6 off I-390 onto NY-36 and Letchworth State Park. After visiting the park continue to Leicester and US-20A west into the Buffalo area where I-90 (east) and I-190 (north) will get you to Niagara Falls.
Corning is roughly about half way on this journey, so if you've got people to visit or another reason to spend time there it would be a good place to take an overnight stop to break up the trip.
